KEEP YOUR ACCOUNT SECURE - DO NOT USE SOMEPAGE (5/26/08)

No, this is not a support center, but if you have a technical question regarding hardware, software etc, ask it here. Don't expect working resolutions though ;P

Some of you may or may not know it, but there have been recent hackings, with people losing everything across
multiple servers. It seems that due to the recent mass bannings of RMT, they are hitting the player base directly. So, make sure you are safe.

If you are on PC, run Spyware and Antivirus software regularly. Once a month is not enough, I'd do them both, at least once a week. Make sure the definitions are up to date.

DO NOT use the LS community website made by SE. It requires you to put in your POL User ID and Password. It is a suspect in the recent account losses.

Make sure you have a good password. If it isn't, change it.

Bad passwords
Your birthdate
Your name
Your character's name
Anything found in the dictionary
Anything easy to guess

Good passwords
Anything 7+ with a mix of numbers and letters and varying caps The longer the better. Make it up, don't use things you've seen. Took me 5 seconds to come up with "bk38sO809Ad". And no, that is not my password.

How to change your password
Log in to POL
Service and Support
Membership
Input your password
Please select a category -> Update PlayOnline Password
Fill in the fields. WRITE DOWN YOUR NEW PASSWORD ON PAPER
Next
Playonline password checkbox
Update

You will be taken back to the log in screen.

Keep your ID and password safe
. If you can't remember it, keep it on a piece of paper. Do not type it into anything other than the SE client.

15 character passwords. -- Assuming saved login and passwords are saved into the Windows registry, they would be stored as LM Hashes (how windows stores all passwords). LM-Hashes, unfortunately are easily crackable (in about 10-15sec) if someone were to have access to a large volume dictionary on hand. Yes, these dictionaries are available on the web. The way the pw cracker works on LM hashes it takes a 14 character pw and breaks them down into two subgroups of 7, and decodes seperately. Passwords longer than 14 doesn't mean it's not hackable, but gives dictionary attackers a harder time to decode.

As stated above, do have active security programs running on your system. I personally use Symantec AntiVirus, which constantly scans the system for any changes of files or loading of files as well as spyware, adware etc.

When running any sort of web browser, use a secure setting of medium or above. Enable popup blocker. Personally I would suggest not using Internet Explorer, as Microsoft occasionally has security issues with their software. Also, IE is the top most targeted web browser.

I'm assuming everyone or just about everyone is on broadband. No matter how many PC's you are on, single PC, X360, PS2, whatever. If you are hooked up to broadband, use a router. NAT firewalls helps hide your PC from being viewed directly from the outside. Don't DMZ your internal IP and don't open (forward) more ports than necessary. And yes... change the default router password >.> I can tell you straight on that if you have a Linksys router, your default password was "admin" and if you own a Netgear router, your default l/p was "admin"/"password". I personally use a corporate type router software installed on a seperate PC (http://www.smoothwall.org). If you are curious about it, you can PM or /tell me in game.
