Laptop no longer reads data CDs, but plays DVDs

No, this is not a support center, but if you have a technical question regarding hardware, software etc, ask it here. Don't expect working resolutions though ;P

Laptop no longer reads data CDs, but plays DVDs

So yeah. If I try to run a data CD, my laptop thinks there is nothing in the drive. If I try to play a DVD though, it works just fine. All one drive, DVD-ROM.

This laptop has never been dropped so I am wondering if the CD read part quit working, or if it is something in the programming. :|

did you install or update any new burning cd software lately?

do you get any error msgs after putting data cd in?

Try booting in SAFE Mode, and see if Windows in Safe Mode CAN read the CD drive

Never tried it, but no other data CDs work.

No, it acts like the CD isn't even there.

are the data cd, cdrs that was copied? or is it retail cd that purchase from stores?

when laptop starts press F8...
some laptop is F5 or F7 usually its F8

Check you dvd/cd-rw drive properties tab, and check properties/recording to see if it has any options about allow cd burning on this drive? Make sure its checked.

It's hardware issue. I have a DVD Burner that no longer reads plain CDs. Why? no idea. As for firmware, the update did nothing either.

and yeah if in safemode still can't read, pretty much a bsod drive about to totally die.
Check manuf for warranty on laptop.
